Browsing through Michael’s Craft Store, I came across acrylic coasters for needlework. The kit includes a cross stitch pattern, Aida cloth, self-adhesive mounting board and cork backing, and finishing instructions. Immediately I thought of a lovely Bargello needlepoint pattern to use instead of the cross stitch; so I purchased a coaster to use as an experiment.
How to Stitch the Bargello Needlepoint Coaster
Since I love to stitch quick and easy Bargello stash treasures, this one was the easiest to make so far. Each coaster will hold a piece of finished needlepoint that’s 3” in diameter.
- Use the self-adhesive mounting board to draw a 3” circle on 18-mesh canvas. Choose a Bargello pattern or stitch it free-form. Select cotton threads in your choice of color scheme and stitch to the edge of the drawn outline.
- Use a finishing glue or paste to seal the stitching on back of the canvas. Allow to dry thoroughly. Cut the excess canvas, leaving enough to wrap around the mounting board.
- Peel the protective backing off of the mounting board, center the mounting board on top of the needlepoint with the glue side up so that when you wrap the excess canvas around the board it will stick. Pull the excess canvas tight around the board and insert it into the coaster.
- Peel the protective backing off the cork, center it over the acrylic coaster and press firmly. Turn coaster over and place a few books on top for a couple of hours. Your coaster is now ready for use.
Bargello needlepoint coasters make great gifts for all occasions, and from start to finish, they only take a few hours to make. Visit your local craft store to get the coasters, or purchase the Ramco Acrylic Coaster Circle or the Ramco Acrylic Coaster Square
