Time Spent: 4 Hours
I’ve been having a lot of fun stitching the bargello needlepoint pillow. I think it’s because I’m designing it as I go. While I don’t do this for every bargello project I make, every now and then it’s good to depart from the tried and true, and experiment a little.
I must say that with experimentation comes a mistake here or there (and sometimes everywhere), usually when I change my mind about a particular design area. That’s happened already. I’ve decided to put different bargello designs in the four corners of my pillow. Originally I thought to stitch a double bargello border and add a little basketweave stitching in between; but now that doesn’t work with where I’m going in the overall design, so I’ll have to pull it all out.
This post’s picture shows you what the bargello flame stitch looks like when using variegated yarns and overdyed floss. I like the different textures and contrasts between the soft shine of Silk-n-Ivory and the matte finish of overdyed cotton. Plus, I found the rhythm of stitching the bargello flame stitch very soothing. I almost hated to see it end; but have chosen not to repeat it for any of the remaining three corners.
Ah well, I do have a goal to finish this by the end of April; it’s going to be a gift for my niece, who’s graduating from college in May. She’s very appreciative of hand made things and is a budding needlewoman herself.
Stay tuned for the next corner. I’m sure it will be a surprise (both for you and for me)!
