It’s a tradition in my family to give graduating seniors two special gifts: Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss and a handmade needlework item. My daughter usually provides the book and I supply the needlework.
This year’s graduates will receive Bargello needlepoint items. My niece, who is graduating from college, will get this lovely Bargello needlepoint leather pouch; and my nephew, who is putting high school behind him, will receive a Bargello needlepoint leather wallet.
Both of the needlepoint designs were created to fit pre-finished leather items manufactured by Lee Needle Arts, Inc. Because the wallet is a gift for a male, I stitched it in black and charcoal silk on 18-mesh canvas. I think he will appreciate the subtle free-form design.
On the other hand, it was important that my niece’s gift fit her personality, so I fashioned a Bargello needlepoint design that would be both beautiful and functional. Using a traditional Florentine embroidery pattern with a 6-1 step, I stitched the design on 18-mesh canvas in a red and green complementary color scheme.
The colors are of special significance. They symbolize my niece’s character attributes and my best wishes for her career and life. Green was chosen because it represents growth in the midst of change, lifelong learning, self-respect and well-being. Even as a child my niece was constantly learning and pursuing new ideas. As a college senior she spent a whole semester in Fiji as an exchange student.
Red was selected as the primary color in the design to signify life, vitality, prosperity and joy. Since it is the color chosen by most extroverts, red fits my niece’s personal style extremely well. She’s energetic, action-oriented and has the confidence to go after her dreams.
I enjoy making memories, and this one joins the host of Bargello needlepoint musings I love so much. My congratulations go out to Sara and Sam…straight from the heart!
