Bargello Needlepoint Ort Ball
Ever heard of an “Ort Ball”? Well, it is actually a glass Christmas tree ornament that has been filled with waste snippets of thread from various needlepoint projects.
I first came across the idea in a Japanese Embroidery class where a fellow stitcher mentioned that instead of throwing waste pieces of silk thread in the trash; she fills a glass ball with them, and at Christmas time, hangs them on her tree.
What a clever idea!
Since I will have numerous opportunities to make an assortment of Bargello needlepoint ort balls during the 2010 Bargello Challenge, I thought you might be interested in doing something similar with your waste threads.
Here is an example of my first Bargello Needlepoint Ort Ball, which is taken from the first 35 days of the Bargello Challenge.

This is a great idea. Last year we started the “Totally Useless SAL“, we don’t actually stitch — we just save the orts from our stitching. I put mine in a glass ball at the end of the year, but other members had even more fun with theirs’. Pop over and have a look at our fun albiet useless, not-quite-a-Stitch-a-Long.

Hello Yoyo,
This is such a clever idea! I can’t wait to sign-up and start a new Totally Useless SAL. Althea

I didn’t really intend to “hook” you, I just thought that you’d enjoy seeing what others do with their orts…but now that we have you WELCOME!!
I just noticed that the next post is a pattern I used quite a while ago to make a tote for myself, I did “spring” colors and I really loved the finished piece. My eye doesn’t ‘catch’ patterns too easily so I had to look twice at it, so thanks for giving the reference, now I know it was the same pattern. I’m loving this 365 days btw.

Yoyo, no hook at all. I love reading about new creative ways to do all things stitching related. I’m really looking forward to the Totally Useless SAL. I’ve chosen a great container that I will be using for other bargello projects this year. I still plan to use the glass balls for the 365 day bargello project. Althea
