For the best-looking results, take time to prepare BEFORE you make the first stitch in your Bargello needlepoint project.
Common tasks like stretching the canvas, getting it ready to stitch and choosing color schemes and appropriate threads are the same no matter the type of needlepoint project you are making; but equally important are the two preparation activities that should be considered BEFORE you purchase canvas and supplies.
Desired Outcome
What do you plan to do with the completed Bargello needlepoint? It’s absolutely critical that you have a desired outcome for each Bargello needlepoint project you stitch. When you can visualize what and how the finished product will be used, you’ll remain motivated and excited while stitching. In this case prep work is simply taking some time to reflect on the project’s intended purpose so that you can experiment with and interpret a Bargello design to fit that purpose.
Stitching Plan
What are the actions you will take to get ready to stitch? You may think I’m a little obsessive-compulsive, but before I stitch a Bargello needlepoint project I make a stitching plan. This plan includes the steps I will take from beginning to end. I add to the list when stitching and check off each step as it’s accomplished. That way, when life intrudes or I don’t get to stitch as I’d planned, I can still record the accomplishments in my Bargello Needlepoint Stitch Notebook to keep me motivated—especially when working on a challenging or large Bargello project.
