Choosing Fabric Backing and Trims for Finishing Bargello Needlepoint Ornaments

Christmas ornaments can be finished in a variety of ways using plain to ornate backing fabrics that enhance the stitched designs. Fabric backing should match your stitched needlepoint ornaments. You can use almost any light to medium weight fabric with a light stretch in order to get smooth coverage and a professional finish. Heavy weight drapery and upholstery fabric should be avoided because they make final assembly difficult and bulky.

Here are some suggested fabrics to use as backings for your finished Bargello needlepoint Christmas ornaments.

Velvet
Cotton Velveteen
Brocade
Calico
Moire Silk
Satin

Decorative Trim

Many kinds of decorative trims and laces are available for finishing Bargello needlepoint Christmas ornaments. Cording can be made by twisting pearl cotton and other threads or you can purchase ready made cord in assorted colors and styles that can be sewn in the seam of the ornament for a nicely finished edge. Jingle bells, small roses and ribbons or fancy buttons are great embellishments for Christmas ornaments. It would be a good idea to build a small stash of embellishments and trims. Here are a few suggestions:
