This very adaptable Bargello needlepoint design is found on pp. 24-25 in Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Muller.
The step can be adjusted as well as the thread length. For example, in today’s Bargello Challenge sample I used a 6-3 step.
The Bargello pattern can also be mirrored, reversed or worked with a combination of the two.
And if that’s not enough, there are countless color possibilities. I used Needlepoint Silk, Silk ‘n Colors, and Madeira Mouline Egyptian Cotton Embroidery Floss in four shades of blue.

Yes, Elmsley that’s a definite bet! Her book is on the schedule for later this year. Althea
I’m blind as a bat! I visit here every day!
I hope you do some of Dorothy Kaestner’s 4 way designs …..
Hello Elmsley Rose,
I love doing 4-way Bargello. So far, I’ve stitched 4 pieces for the Bargello Challenge ( see the Mitered Bargello Designs Index). They were on Days 56-59. The 3″ square lends itself beautifully to four-way stitching; and since I usually get a bit carried away working the design, I extend it to 4″. Althea
Are you going to be able to do any 4-way designs, or are your canvas squares too small to get the design working?
best,
