When worked over a large area in a 6-3 step, the Bargello needlepoint flame design looks as if it is undulating, rolling and rising and falling across the canvas–like waves.
Okay, I’m waxing poetic here, but this Bargello pattern found on pp. 78-79 in Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Muller, is one of my favorite flame stitch designs.
The designer recommends using 12 colors in both monochromatic and complementary schemes. Because of the small 3″ square I stitch for the Bargello challenge, I stitched with 9 colors–mostly in Silk n’ Ivory threads; but I also used J.L. Walsh Silk Wool thread.
