Interlocking Bargello diamonds worked in a 4-2 step make this pattern look like argyle knit (see p. 61 in Bargello: An Explosion In Color by Margaret Boyles. The key to success here is to stitch the ENTIRE OUTLINE FIRST, and then fill in the remaining colors.
Stitching the outline is easier if you work the complete center diamond motif lines (including the inner lines), and then follow up with adjacent ones. To ensure that design edges remain in keeping with the 4-2 step, rotate the canvas 180 degrees so that you will always be working from top to bottom.
To make the design sparkle, I used gold metallic thread. Two shades of red and white filled in the pattern.

Looks great! A few years back, I stitched a 24″ x 36″ bargello sampler that turned out really well. I made it a “Patchwork” design, with samples of alot of bargello designs…I’ll have take a picture and post it…it’s tough to just describe…Happy Stitchin’…
