This Bargello pattern, found on pp. 92-93 in Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Muller, calls for both vertical and horizontal embroidery.
First, you work the Bargello design up, down and across the canvas by going over 6 threads and up or down 3 threads; and then you place a horizontal stitch (same color) over the 5-thread group of peaks or valleys.
Lot’s of fun! I worked the design in Silk n’ Ivory in the recommended color scheme (darkest brown, 3 shades of taupe, and white).
