Chevron motifs are found everywhere; but mostly in badges on military or police uniforms. The stripes on the sleeves are made with the chevron motif to indicate the wearer’s rank and service.
In Bargello needlepoint, the chevron pattern is formed when two opposite diagonal lines connect in the center to form a “V”. The pattern can be upright, sideways or inverted.
Taken from pp 66-67 of Bargello: An Explosion In Color by Margaret Boyles, this Bargello embroidery pattern showcases the chevron motif through the use of color and stitch variation.
Once the green outline was worked, alternating rows were filled in with red, white and blue to bring out the shape of the motif.
My father was a veteran who served in and retired from the US Navy. This Bargello needlepoint pattern and the next three as well are fitting tributes to his life and memory.
