This Bargello needlepoint line design echoes the contours of the mountains and the edges of the sea with its dips and swells.
Found on pp. 1 to 3 in Bargello Stars, Shells and Borders by Josephine Ruth Paine, the Bargello pattern is quite simple with a 4-2 step.
I used Silk n’ Ivory with 18-mesh needlepoint canvas to work the design,; and to capture the full design, the usual 3-inch square sample was increased to 7 inches by 3 inches.

Bargello Stars, Shells and Borders is a presentation of The University of Georgia, and contains over 50 needlepoint projects. A rare book indeed, it is quite hard to find. |

Hello Annelle, Thanks for the new info about the book. I will put a link to Ruth Kern’s Books in remaining posts for this book. I didn’t know about the PBS series. I’ll have to do some research on that one. On another note, I was a student at Callaway Needle Arts School for many years. Keep on stitchin’ Bargello needlepoint. Althea
HI,
I have this wonderful book and am thrilled that you are using some of her patterns. The author had a series on PBS many years ago making her padded shells. It was a wonderful seires and I was really glad to find the book last year at the Callaway Needle Arts Show. It was in Ruth Kern’s book room and she has several other copies.
Hello Sara, yes it’s OK! I often do so with scraps of canvas (I try not to waste anything). My stitch tension has not been affected. Althea
Well worth doing the enlargement!
I have been wondering if it is OK to turn Mono canvas 90% to have the selvedge edges north/south? I have the perfect scrap to try it out on if the tension won’t be affected!
Bye for now, Sara
