September starts out with a new book and the lion rampart, a traditional heraldic pattern worked in bargello needlepoint.
Taken from The Margaret Boyles Bargello Workbook, this collection of original designs offers a stunning pattern for a rectangular shaped pillow worked in 4-2 step with gold, red, blue and white threads.
The full bargello pattern is found on pp. 4-5 with detailed chart, materials list and stitching instructions.
Since it is a large design, I’ve worked the lion rampart motif for today’s Bargello Challenge design, and will feature the cross motif tomorrow.
I used J.L. Walsh Silk Wool, Silk n’ Ivory and Caron’s Watercolours to work the bargello design.

The Margaret Boyles Bargello Workbook contains 32 complete needlepoint projects, all photographed and charted in full color. Color stitching diagrams eliminate the need for hart-to-read symbols or numbers. |

Hello Beth, I think it will look fantastic if you were to add some fuzz to the manes. What a clever idea! I would love to see a picture of it when you are finished, and would welcome a chance to write about it on this site. Althea
I love this lion! Earlier this summer, inspired by all your bargello stitching, I took out all the bargello books that I could find in my local library and the library system it belongs to. The lion is one of the designs that I definitely wanted to do. But then, I returned all the books, and I didn’t remember which one the lion came from (or the other designs I really liked either). So now, I now at least one of the ones to request again!
I was thinking of adding a little fuzz to the manes, through.
Beth
Hello Jill, I’ve got a few ideas brewing! Althea
Love this one. What will I do when this 2010 challenge is over?!?!
