The pattern in this Bargello needlepoint design is formed similar to the “Domes and Spires” Bargello piece in Day 5.
The pattern is formed by reversing and mirroring a row of the Bargello design against itself. The spaces formed as a result of doing this are filled in with contrasting colors to accentuate the lines.
Taken from pp. 80-81 of Bargello: An Explosion In Color by Margaret Boyles, it has a 4-2 step that is best worked in two sets of monochromatic colors.
Although it looks daunting, the design can be worked without too much stress if you stitch the main outline (the dark gray color in my sample) first, and then fill in the rest of the colors.
To readily see the motifs, I increased the stitched canvas size to 4.5 inches instead of 3.
