The Twin Peaked Florentine Wave Pattern shows the infinite variety that can be achieved using the Florentine or Bargello Needlepoint Stitch.
Found on pp. 67-68 in Traditional Bargello by Dorothy Phelan, it has a 6-2 step, and is worked one row at a time.
To establish the pattern, first work the main establishing pattern row in the center of the canvas, and then work from this row upward to the top of the canvas. Repeat from the main pattern row to work the bottom half of the canvas.
Since, I was in a “tweedy” mood again, I used four different shades of Rainbow Gallery’s Twedie 18.

I’ve really been enjoying these posts. I did a small Bargello pattern by Teresa Wentzler (from a class at the 2009 Toronto Creative Festival) and fell in love with it. My grandmother did a lot of Barello cushions in wool back in the 60s through early 80s (she passed away in 1986), and I decided to replicate one of hers. When I took it to my local needlework store, one of the staff said that she thought she’d seen the pattern before, but had no idea where. Thought you know might, as I’d like to get the book or whatever that my grandmother used, if that is possible. Link to cushion photo. Many thanks.
Christine
Hello Christine,
Your Grannie’s cushion is beautiful!
I’ve found the pattern. It is in Bargello: An Explosion In Color by Margaret Boyles on page 86. I used this pattern in Day 34: A colorful Landscape of A Traditional Bargello Needlepoint Design. You can purchase the book by clicking here. Keep on Stitchin’ Bargello Needlepoint, Althea
Thank you so much! Here is a link to my WIP. I decided to do my “homage” in blues. http://pics.livejournal.com/xinef/pic/0005daqc/g19. I’ll probably be posting another progress photo tomorrow. I finished the 9 ogees and have 3 of the 4 internal “gaps” done now. Will finish the last “gap” this evening and then start on the partials around the edge. My grandmother did those in the background colour, but I plan to do the partial patterns instead, and then do the background colour around the whole thing.
In case you are interested, latest progress photo is at http://pics.livejournal.com/xinef/pic/0005ecet/g19.
Christine, keep on stitchin’; you’re doing great! Althea
Got the book. Thank you. I’m sure my grandmother must have had a copy because I’ve found the patterns for two other cushions she did.
Hello Christine,
Isn’t it great to have found it? I wish you much success in duplicating your Grannie’s work! Althea
