Needlemania is the perfect word to describe my passion for bargello needlepoint.
Most avid needleworkers have an excessive excitement or enthusiasm for their art form. It’s almost an addiction. To tell if you have bargello needlemania, answer these questions:
- Do you spend many hours stitching without taking a break?
- Do you sometimes stitch in bed?
- Did a family member or best friend give you a pair of pajamas with embroidery scissors sewn into the pocket?
- Are you able to walk past a needlepoint shop without stopping to sample the goodies?
- Do you have a thread stash that’s larger than your laundry basket, and are you thinking of buying a new basket to accommodate your plans to accumulate even more threads?
- Do you surf the web looking for the latest bargello needlepoint gadgets, books and patterns?
- Are you obsessed with designing your own patterns, so much so that everywhere you go you see creative bargello patterns?
- Have you thought about quitting, but get sick to your stomach every time you start to pack up your bargello needlepoint supplies?
- Do you stitch in meetings, at church or while waiting in grocery lines?
Answering yes to one of two of these questions may indicate mild bargello needlemania; but if you were honest, you probably answered yes to six or more, which means you definitely have bargello needlemania. Don’t worry, I’m right there with you!

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, 4-6 hours a day.
2.I don’t stitch in bed because it’s hard for me to do it, but I would if I could.
3. No, but I keep a bin of scissors in my desk drawer and have seriously considered buying them in big lots from TSA.
4. Not one bit. Happily for my budget there isn’t a store near me.
5. My thread stash takes up most of a room. The threads waiting to get put away are the ones in the basket.
6. Always, I think I have every Bargello book written, but I’m always open to getting more.
7. I almost always an designing a Bargello of some kind.
8. I realized long ago I couldn’t possibly quit as stitching is a necessity for me.
9.I stitch everywhere and all the time.
Keep Stitching,
Janet
I feel the same way. Stitching completes me. I need it like the air I breathe (sorry, if that’s a bit over the top).
