Although it isn’t clear who started the tradition, legend has it that lighted candles were placed on Christmas trees to remind people of the starry night when Christ was born. Benjamin Franklin is credited with taking the tradition to new heights by decorating his Christmas trees with colorful electric lights.
Today, Christmas lights come in all sizes, shapes and colors including storybook character theme lights. But, the best Christmas lights are the traditional old-fashioned ones depicted in this Bargello Needlepoint Christmas Light Ornament design.
Beginners and experienced stitchers will find this FREE Bargello needlepoint project quick and easy to make. The finished design is approximately 4” square.
Color Schemes…
I used monochromatic color schemes in red, blue, orange, purple, green, and yellow. Sort through your needlepoint thread stash to see if you have a four to six color monochromatic scheme in these colors, and only then should you purchase additional threads. I’ve included the DMC floss colors in the pattern instructions. The base of each light was stitched in Fyre Werks Metallic Ribbon #F31, and for the filaments I used Krenik Very Fine Braid #4.
Bargello Christmas Lights is designed for 18-mesh canvas but it can be stitched on 14-mesh and congress cloth. The original design size is diamond-shaped; but if you’d like a smaller ornament or a different shape, make the necessary adjustments.

I am eager to make the bargello Christmas lights ornament -thanks for providing it to your fans! I am having difficulty knowing how to do the outline (background) – can’t determine from the pictures how many threads it is over. I am sure I am missing some very simple instruction but it hasn’t clicked yet. Thanks!

Thanks for your interest and I’m sorry about any confusion I may have caused. To read the chart, each square on the grid is a canvas thread; so if there are four squares of the same color this means you should go over 4 canvas threads to place your stitch. The Christmas Lights Pattern is a 4-2 step, meaning that you will go over 4 threads and step up 2 threads to make the next stitch.
