To read the chart, each square on the grid is a canvas thread; so if there are four squares of the same color this means you should go over 4 canvas threads to place your stitch. The Christmas Lights Pattern is a 4-2 step, meaning that you will go over 4 threads and step up 2 threads to make the next stitch.
