This stitch is a very old one that was created to simulate the famous Gobelin tapestries in Paris. The Gobelin Droit Bargello Filler Stitch is very fast and makes the work seem to fly.
Also called Upright Gobelin and Straight Gobelin, its “freehand” versatility can be used for uneven areas where a straight stitch is required over varying horizontal canvas threads. It’s great for background stitches or edges–especially for belts.
When working Gobelin Droit Bargello Filler Stitch, you should use an easy but definite tension to keep the stitches plump and firm. Also, you should check periodically to make sure no canvas shows through between rows.
