This allows for flexibility on varied gauges of needlepoint canvas.

To determine the design size for your chosen needlepoint canvas.

The Formula

1. Count the number of threads in width and length on the pattern chart; and then
2. Divide both the width and the length by either 2.5cm or 1” to calculate the new design area.

Here’s an example based on a pattern chart that is 42 threads wide and 28 threads long, which is to be stitched on 18-mesh canvas.

In Centimeters
A 42/18 = 2.33 (width) 28/18 = 1.56 (length)
B 2.33 x 2.5cm = 5.83cm 1.56 x 2.5cm = 3.9cm
C NEW DESIGN AREA: 5.83cm (width) x 3.9cm (length)

In Inches
A 42/18 = 2.33 (width) 28/18 = 1.56 (length)
B 2.33 x 1in = 2.33in 1.56 x 1in = 1.56in
C NEW DESIGN AREA: 2.33in (width) x 1.56in (length)
