Even the most advanced stitcher can make a stitching mistake in bargello needlepoint.
Usually mistakes occur when losing one’s place in counting or when trying to stitch an intricate design that has lots of minute detail.
A one-stitch mistake can cause the finished bargello needlepoint project to look off-centered or create havoc while stitching as you try to compensate.
Helpful Tips
- As soon as you notice a mistake, STOP stitching! Take out all stitches until you are one to two stitches before the mistake; and then re-stitch according to the bargello design pattern.
- Keep distractions to a minimum while stitching bargello needlepoint in order to avoid mistakes. Try to finish one full pattern repeat or color change to avoid losing your place.
- Do not try to compensate for your error. This will only make things worse. You’re better off ripping out threads; but do so very carefully.
- When using fibers that have been anchored by other stitches or that would be damaged if pulled through the canvas again, carefully cut the incorrect stitches on the right side of the canvas with the sharp tip of embroidery scissors. Use caution to avoid cutting the canvas threads.
- After cutting, gently remove stitches on either side of the cut stitches until you have a long enough strand to anchor on the wrong side of the canvas. Re-thread the needle and make the correct stitches.
Some mistakes are inevitable. When you make them, don’t panic; just take the time to correct your work. In the end you’ll be happier and your enjoyment of bargello needlepoint will increase with each new project.
