When using two or more strands of thread to stitch Bargello needlepoint, a laying tool should be used to make each strand lie flat side-by-side; but when using only one strand of thread, care should be taken to maintain an even twist for great Bargello needlepoint results.
To keep all your hard work and effort from going to waste because of uneven twists in the thread, check for consistency in the twist as you make each Bargello stitch. Consider these helpful tips.
How to Maintain An Even Thread Twist
- Each time you start to make a stitch, give the thread a slight twist in a direction that will tighten it as you bring the needle up from under the canvas.
- Only a slight twist is needed or it will be too tight. As you continue to stitch, untwist a little at a time if the thread starts to look too tight.
- When the thread gets too short to make a good twist or becomes fuzzy from repeated stitching, end it and start a new strand.
- At the end of each pattern row, check your work carefully for uneven twists and make corrections as needed.
Maintaining an even thread twist may seem to be more trouble than it’s worth; but once you’ve made it part of your stitching habit, you’ll be surprised at how professional and beautiful your Bargello needlepoint will look.
