Every Tuesday evening, I spend a few hours stitching Bargello needlepoint with my 4 year-old granddaughter, Gabby.
It’s become a precious time that we share working on a needlepoint project. It all started when she commented to me one evening as I sat stitching a Bargello pillow, “Mimi, I want to do some needlework too!” So, I pulled out a piece of scrap plastic canvas, some knitting yarn and a plastic needle and showed her how to make straight Gobelin stitches.
Since that time, we’ve progressed from single-color practice pieces to small needlepoint kits designed for children. Here are two of Gabby’s favorites that make great needlepoint gift ideas for the children in your life.
Simply Needlepoint Kit
A child can start learning needlepoint right away with this easy butterfly kit. It comes with pre-printed plastic canvas, plastic needle and lots of bright yarn. It can even be framed when stitching is done in the 6-1/2 ‘x 6-1/2″ frame that’s included. Great for children ages 5 and up. With supervision, a 4-year old like Gabby could also stitch it. Quincrafts Learn To Stitch Needlepoint Flower Kit
This kit teaches children how to stitch needlepoint by color. The extra large canvas holes and full-color printed design make stitching easy. Great activity for travel. Kit includes: 1 full color Flower printed plastic canvas, yarn, plastic needle, 6″ x 6″ yellow plastic frame, and easy-to-follow instructions. Everything comes in a re-usable vinyl tote (your child’s first needlepoint project bag)! For ages 6 and up; but once your 4-year old has been stitching for a while, it can be worked with ease and your supervision. Buy the kit here.
Help your child develop a stitching habit and a love of Bargello needlepoint with these kits. In doing so, you’ll also enhance their fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.
