Shop of the Week – Needlepoint & Other Things

Tucked away in a quaint little shopping center in the East Milcreek area of Salt Lake City, this needlepoint store offers a great selection of fibers, hand painted canvases and accessories.

I took my first formal needlepoint class there back in the mid 1990’s. I remember finding the shop quite by accident, but immediately fell in love with the atmosphere and the courteous manner of Carolyn, the shop owner.

Once a week I would take a well-deserved lunch hour and spend stitching with a few fellow enthusiasts who were working on a variety of needlepoint projects. What wonderful camaraderie. Margene Smith, the instructor, would help select colors and fibers and teach us how to choose stitch techniques and embellish the canvas. Not only was she an excellent instructor, she encouraged us to join guilds like ANG and EGA to acquire even more skill in the needle arts.

Located at 2020 E 3300 S Ste 25, Salt Lake City, UT 84109, Needlepoint & Other Things is on the way to the ski slopes (there’s a picturesque view of the mountains from there). Tourists and visitors often drop in to purchase that “gotta have” new hand painted canvas to work on in the evenings after fun in the snow.

If you’re enjoying “the greatest snow on earth” in Salt Lake City or a surrounding ski town, don’t forget to stop by, browse and buy! You’ll find a few local specialties showcasing the good-natured college rivalry between the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, unique Christmas stockings (I stitched four huge ones), and stitch guides by Margene. Contact the shop at (801) 485-2512.

Needlepoint & Other Things is one of the things I cherish about living in Salt Lake City. Here’s a shout out to my old friends!
