When I lived in Connecticut, my local needlepoint shop was Next Station Needlepoint. It gets its name from the busy New Canaan to New York City commuter train station around the corner. What I loved about this shop was the fact that it offered ONLY needlepoint related items including hand-painted needlepoint canvases, needlepoint kits and the full lines of 74 different types and sizes of needlepoint fibers.
Needlepoint belts and Christmas ornaments were the rage at that time, and Next Station Needlepoint had a huge selection that was not only colorful but unique as well. I owe my passion for needlepoint Christmas ornaments to Next Station Needlepoint. To this day, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree is always tucked in a cozy corner and remains decorated all year long to display different kinds of ornaments and unique finishing techniques.
Another wonderful thing about this shop is that you can do one-stop shopping there—from buying all that you need to stitch to getting full service finishing and framing when you’ve completed stitching. I spent many hours there browsing, buying and even stitching (classes are offered as well). I was particularly fond of the trunk shows that were hosted throughout the year.
I love the way Michelle O’Connor, the owner, describes her passion for needlepoint: “You can never have enough canvases and there is a canvas for everyone.” Check out Next Station Needlepoint’s online catalog, and if you’re ever in the vicinity, stop in for a visit: 72 Grove Street, New Canaan, Ct. 06840 – 203-966-5613.
This Shop of the Week brings out that nostalgic feeling.
