The Flame Stitch pattern is the easiest and best known Bargello needlepoint design motif. It can be altered by increasing or decreasing the length and spacing of stitches from start to peak. You can even make different heights that resemble mountain peaks or deep valleys based on your own design needs.
Making the Flame Stitch
- Make a 4-1 or 4-2 bargello needlepoint stitch either up or down the canvas until you reach a desired peak.

- Return to the original level by stitching the same way either down or up.
- Repeat the pattern across the needlepoint canvas to establish the design.
Variations in The Flame Stitch bargello needlepoint motif are limitless—especially with the use of color and the length and depth of the zigzag-like effect it makes. This is a great pattern to use to try your bargello needlepoint wings. Why not make a four to six inch sample of the flame stitch as part of a bargello notebook?
