What’s the proper thread length to use when stitching bargello needlepoint?
This is probably one of the first questions a beginner will ask, because the tendency is to use a very long piece of thread to start stitching. While it is true that bargello needlepoint stitches will cover the canvas quickly, sometimes a longer thread strand doesn’t work.
It all depends on the type of thread you’re using, stitching tension and the design itself. For example, an overly long piece could be disastrous if you are using two or more strands to stitch. The frequent pulling through the canvas mesh can shred the fibers, produce unwanted fuzziness and give the stitched area an uneven appearance. On the other hand, when stitching a large design area if the strands are too short you’ll waste a lot of time starting and ending, which may give your finished stitching a bumpy appearance.
I’ve been told that a good rule of thumb is that the finer the needlepoint canvas, the shorter the strand should be. Since a lot of bargello needlepoint designs are stitched on #10 to #13 needlepoint canvas, a good length to use is about 18 to 20 inches. However, the most important thing to remember when choosing the proper thread length for stitching bargello needlepoint is to find a length that provides the best results and greatest convenience for you.
