Assorted Persian Yarns

Persian yarn for Bargello needlepoint is 100% wool yarn made of three individual strands or “plies” that are loosely twisted together. This makes it quite versatile for use on various size canvas mesh.

One “ply” is usually adequate for 18-mesh canvas; but two or more will be necessary for 14-mesh or coarser canvas.

If you use too many strands in a Bargello needlepoint project, stitching will be difficult and the result will be lumpy and uneven.

Too few strands will cause the canvas to show through and make the stitching look skimpy.

Persian yarn for Bargello needlepoint has a distinctive nap. In one direction, it feels smooth; and in the opposite direction it feels rough.

For better results, stitch so that the thread glides through the needlepoint canvas in the smooth direction.

When you are stitching Bargello needlepoint with two or more plies of Persian yarn, make sure that they are placed in the needle in the same direction.

  1. Hello Christine,

Yes, you separate them and put them together into the needle (make sure both are going in the same direction–usually the smooth direction). Althea

  2. Christine says:

If you are stitching with two or more plies, do you separate them first and then put into your needle, as I do with cotton floss?
